INTEGRAL COLOR WITH TWO SHADES

MODERATE

Water bubbles through a pump covered with river rocks.

This project demonstrates how to use two colors in the same form. We used two concentrations of the same color because we wanted a subtle and natural finish, but you can use any color combination you like. We layered the two colors in the form, pouring one layer of colored concrete over another, allowing the two layers to mingle where they meet.

The form is made from two plastic serving bowls. The finished project measures 18 inches in diameter and is versatile—it can be a birdbath, water feature, or planter. We opted to make it a water feature by installing a pump which we covered with river rocks. You can adjust the sizes of the bowls as you like, but keep in mind that the thickness of the concrete wall should be a minimum of 1½ inches when you’re using a commercialgrade concrete mix like Sakrete or Quikrete. If you want a water feature with a thinner wall and lighter weight, use a higher-performance mix.
